Nerve Conduction Studies

Billing Instructions

When billing for a nerve conduction study (CPT 95900-95904) done on an extremity, please use LT and -RT modifiers to indicate which side of the body was studied. These modifiers should also be used to show when tests are bilateral.

Examples

If testing nerve conduction in both hands of a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome, bill as shown in the following example:

Notes: CPT code 95903 is not an appropriate code to use when billing for nerve conduction studies to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. (Use CPT code 95900)

CPT codes 95900 and 95903 are mutually exclusive and should not be billed together when testing the same nerve.

Claims Filing Information

Include a comment in Block 19 of the CMS 1500 claim form or in the "comments" field of your EMC submission that indicates the site of the studies (e.g., both hands or left leg).
