Modifier Code 76

Modifier code 76 is used to identify a repeat procedure performed by the same physician on the same day.

Example

A chest X-ray is performed prior to insertion of a chest tube and then performed again a short while later to verify its position. The X-rays would be billed as follows:

Note: Do not use modifier 76 to modify procedures that are considered "add on" codes to more comprehensive procedures (e.g., 11201, removal of skin tags: each additional 10 lesions).
