Air Ambulance
Most HMSA plans include air ambulance benefits for emergency transportation to the nearest hospital within Hawaii. Coverage may also apply if you need to be transferred to another facility for a higher level of care or for services not available on the island where you first received treatment.
Please review the ambulance section of your Guide to Benefits for plan-specific information. Some HMSA plans may cover air ambulance services for care received outside of Hawaii in certain emergency situations.
For more information about Air Ambulance coverage, please see the Out-of-State Air Ambulance Services [PDF] section of HMSA’s medical policies.
Ground Ambulance
HMSA plans generally cover emergency ground ambulance transportation to the nearest hospital that can give you the level of care you need. Depending on your plan, you may have a copayment or coinsurance.
At the time of service or when you receive the ambulance bill, be sure to give your HMSA information to the ambulance provider.
Some plans may have additional charges, such as a daily fee or a percentage of the cost. Non-emergency ground transportation may require prior authorization.
Please check your Guide to Benefits for details about your coverage.
