Oahu families in need will benefit from a big donation to the Hawaii Foodbank from employees of the Hawai’i Medical Service Association. Today, employees wrapped up a four-week holiday food drive to help Hawaii’s hungry. They collected a total of $35,000 and 5,000 pounds of canned goods and other nonperishables. The contributions, which were collected at HMSA offices on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Island, will provide more than 100,000 meals statewide.
“The holidays are an especially difficult time for struggling families,” said Dick Grimm, president of Hawaii Foodbank, Inc. “The ability to provide healthy meals to those in need is extremely rewarding and it’s through the generosity of HMSA’s employees that we’re able to accomplish this year after year.”
Throughout the drive, HMSA employees challenged each other to collect food items. Employees formed six teams and created friendly competitions between departments. Monetary donations were also collected to help families celebrate Thanksgiving.
“HMSA is fortunate to have very generous employees who are passionate about what they do,” said HMSA President and Chief Executive Officer Michael A. Gold. “This year, we had our biggest-ever bake sale, featuring not only cakes and cookies, but we had jook, chili and rice, Korean pancakes, you name it. This is a really great way for our employees to showcase their talents and it’s a great reminder of how each of us has the ability to help someone else.”
