Today, the Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) and the Outrigger Keauhou Beach
Resort presented the first ever HMSA’s go Kona Health
Hoolaulea. E Ola Na Kupuna, a health fair for kupuna, was held on the Outrigger
Keauhou lobby and verandah and featured exercise demonstrations, activities and
information booths with a focus on healthy lifestyles for kupuna.
The Ho’olaulea incorporated traditional Hawaiian games and activities to show
kupuna how to get up, get out and get active while maintaining a healthy diet. Healthy
cookbooks were given away to those who participated in a fun scavenger hunt.
Booths included cooking demonstrations, beverage samples and Hawaiian entertainment
throughout the day. Various screenings including diabetes, blood pressure, BMI and
an "Ask a Doctor" table were offered free of charge to those in attendance.
Other activities included yoga, hula, Hawaiian games and singing.
Organizations supporting the fair included Jamba Juice, Hui Malama O Na Oiwi, University
of Hawaii – Department of Human Nutrition & College of Tropical Agriculture,
Kona Lions Club and several others.
The goal of HMSA’s go Kona Hoolaulea was to
promote the importance of good nutrition and active lifestyles to Kona’s kupuna.
HMSA is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
