HMSA Announces Executive Promotions

The Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) announced management promotions today for six employees. George Yamada was promoted to vice president of Claims Services. Kevin Matsumoto was promoted to assistant vice president of Medicaid Programs. Wendy Nakasone was promoted to assistant vice president of Brand Management. Al Ogata was promoted to assistant vice president of Facilities and Security Services. Jennifer Walker was promoted to assistant vice president of Government Business Development. Conni Young was promoted to assistant vice president of Membership Services.

George Yamada is responsible for making sure that doctors, nurses, hospitals, and other health care professionals are reimbursed for the services they provide to improve the health of HMSA members. He leads all claims processing operations. Prior to this, he was senior director and then assistant vice president of Claims Administration. He attended Chaminade University of Honolulu where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Kevin Matsumoto’s focus is taking care of HMSA members who receive government funded health care coverage from QUEST, Hawaii’s Medicaid program. He works with providers, state agencies, and legislators to make sure HMSA and our partners are fulfilling our commitment to HMSA’s QUEST members. Prior to this, he was senior director of Medicaid Programs. He attended the University of Hawaii, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and Master of Public Health and Master of Business Administration degrees.

Wendy Nakasone is responsible for making sure HMSA communicates clearly and effectively with people both inside and outside our company. She oversees marketing and communications, advertising, public and community relations, creative services, Web, and Island Scene magazine. Prior to her promotion, she was director of Marketing & Communications. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in human biology at Stanford University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Santa Clara University.

Al Ogata’s job is to protect the privacy of our member’s information. Through the design and implementation of a strong security program, he prevents members’ confidential information from falling into the wrong hands. His previous positions in the company include director of Business Security & Recovery Services, director of Legal Services, and director of Information Technology Governance. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.

Jennifer Walker is in charge evaluating new business opportunities for HMSA as health care changes and evolves. She does strategic planning on consumer initiatives and provides legal advice to HMSA on changes under health care reform. Prior to this, she was the senior counsel in HMSA’s Legal Services department. She attended the University of Kansas where she earned a Bachelor of Science in genetics, and earned a Juris Doctor and a Master of Arts in biomedical ethics from Case Western Reserve University.

Conni Young’s job is to make sure members have a positive experience when interacting with HMSA from the time they enroll. Her department focuses on several membership service functions including group setup, member enrollment, billing, reconciliation, and phone and email servicing. Previously, she was the senior director of Membership Services. She has been with HMSA for more than 15 years. Before that, she worked for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oregon, Regence Group, for 12 years.
