Why Choose HMSA?

HMSA offers a variety of affordable, quality health plans to meet your individual needs. They include our Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, which are available through employers.

If you’re not eligible for group coverage and are looking for a health plan on your own, HMSA has individual plans for sole proprietors, full-time students, and children. HMSA also offers medical and drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries and coverage under the state’s QUEST program for eligible Hawaii residents.

Large Provider Network

The freedom to choose your own doctor is an important part of your health care. More than 95 percent of Hawaii’s doctors, hospitals and other providers participate with HMSA, giving you flexibility. HMSA has the largest provider network in Hawaii. No matter which plan you choose, there’s a good chance you won’t have to switch doctors. And as a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association member, our symbols are recognized nationwide – so you can rely on BlueCard®for access to the nation’s largest network of providers. HMSA is the only health plan in Hawaii that offers a nationwide network of providers for both PPO and HMO plans.

Excellent Customer Service

HMSA is committed to providing quality customer service on the phone or in person at our HMSA offices statewide. HMSA members consistently indicate in surveys that they are satisfied with the service they receive from HMSA and their HMSA participating physicians. Our members give high marks for access to care, physician skills, medical services, and health care outcomes. HMSA also consistently ranks in the 90th percentile of health plans in national CAHPS® surveys for categories measuring member satisfaction, claims processing, and medical care.

We also provide grants to hospitals to implement technological solutions. And we recognize physicians and hospitals for delivering and maintaining quality care. HMSA is also committed to using the latest technology to continually improve Hawaii’s health care system. HMSA’s Online Care will allow you to see a doctor anytime, from your home or office. National Accreditation

HMSA’s commitment to quality includes voluntary evaluations by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a leading accreditation standard in the health care industry. HMSA remains the only plan in Hawaii to offer PPO and HMO plans that have earned the highest levels of NCQA accreditation.
