When to use the emergency room

Emergency services are for sudden and serious injuries or illnesses.  If you have a condition that requires emergency care, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Going to the emergency room for non-emergencies delays treatment for those with true emergencies. Care received in an emergency room for non-emergent care is not covered by your plan, and you will have to pay the entire bill. Go to the emergency room only if you require immediate care.

Contact your primary care provider as soon as possible after receiving emergency services.  Your primary care provider will update your records and assist you if additional care is needed.

If your condition is not an emergency and you would like to speak to a doctor, contact your primary care provider or talk to a provider on HMSA's Online Care
