Obesity
Obesity outranks both smoking and drinking in its harmful effects on health and
health care costs. Together, physical inactivity and poor diet are rapidly approaching
smoking as the nation’s leading cause of preventable deaths. In 2005, more than half of
Hawaii’s adults were overweight or obese, and the rate of youth obesity was twice the
national average.
With the slogan “get up, get out and get active,” HMSA launched the
go campaign to promote increased physical activity for better health
at any age or fitness level. go events across the state presented the
health benefits of being active, healthy snacks, entertainment, and games and prizes that
promote physical activity.
The go web site features activity guides, interactive tools, and specific
information for young people, seniors, and people with common health conditions. go
online also includes information on related HMSA programs and a statewide calendar of health and
fitness events.
