HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest
The HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest, now in its ninth year, is presented by the Hawaii State Department
of Education, Domestic Violence Action Center, the Hawaii Meth Project, and Mothers
Against Drunk Driving Hawaii.
The contest is open to students from middle and high schools statewide. Students
are to create an original 27-second public service announcement and submit their
videos in one of the following categories:
- Addiction Prevention
- Healthy Living
- Mental Health
- Teen Safety
Winners and their schools received:
- Cash to purchase video equipment or software:
- 1st place in each category – $1,000
- 2nd place in each category – $500
- 3rd place in each category – $250
- Best of Show – An additional $1,000
- Best Middle School entry – $500
- Voters’ Choice – $500
- Recognition in aired television PSAs on local television stations.
The community had the opportunity to vote online for their favorite video at hmsa.com.
This year, the videos got more than 35,000 views on YouTube.
In conjunction with the Hawaii Meth Project and MADD Hawaii, two PSAs that deal with meth
use and underage drinking prevention were awarded special prizes. This year, the
Domestic Violence Action Center also awarded a prize for the top video on the prevention
of teen-related violence.
The Teen Video Awards Contest gives students the opportunity to create health messages
that reach and impact their peers. In the process, students learn about the video
creation process, which includes script writing, video production, and copyright
and privacy laws.
