James, 73, has volunteered for Sage Plus for more than 15 years, helping seniors understand Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance, prescription drug coverage, and long-term care insurance and financing. He also assists elders and the homebound with transportation, doctor visits, shopping, and other errands through his church’s Hui Manawalea progam, which is part of Project Dana.

Nominated by Our Lady of Sorrows Church

Anita, 78, serves as a lay minister for her church, helping as a lector, confirmation instructor, and more. She volunteers with the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, AARP Driver Safety Program, United Visayan Community of Hawaii, and the Girl Scouts of Hawaii. She also cared for terminally ill patients as a respite caregiver for Hospice Hawaii.

Nominated by the Executive Office on Aging

Eudice, 73, visits long-term care facilities and helps with patient complaints and mistreatment issues. She also volunteers for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, The Queen’s Medical Center (as a patient relations representative), and finds time to serve as chair of the Hawaii Policy Advisory Board on Elder Affairs. She was recently appointed to the Honolulu Committee on Aging.

Colleen Minami

Colleen, 67, has provided health care and health care information to needy families and individuals, including many seniors. She also serves as a board member of the Honolulu Community Action Program, the Child & Family Service Guild, and works with teachers and students at the Farrington High School Health Academy.

Nominated by Manana Elementary School

Shirley, 70, recruited seniors to volunteer for Manana Elementary School’s reading program and the annual campus cleanup event. She performs with the Pearl City Paranku Club at Kuakini Rest Home, St. Timothy’s Senior Center, and other care homes. She serves on her church committee to feed the homeless, volunteers for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Red Cross, Ronald McDonald Houses, and more.

Nominated by the United Filipino-American Association of Hawaii

A retired World War II veteran, Felix, 83, has a keen interest in helping his fellow veterans and their families. He helps with all the activities of the United Filipino-American Association and also volunteers with the Bisaya Association of Hawaii, the Filipino Community Center of Hawaii, and at Pauahi Recreation Center.
