Awards
Since 1938, an important part of our mission has been to
improve the health and well-being of our members and all
the people of Hawaii through health promotion and education
and other community services. Community award programs are
one of the special ways HMSA fulfills this commitment.
HMSA’s community award programs focus on staying healthy
and encouraging and helping others to do the same. As you
look through the award pages, you’ll see that the programs
correspond with three broad demographics:
- Young people, particularly those who serve as role models for
their peers. The winners are likely to be community leaders in the
future. Two statewide competitions, the HMSA Kaimana Awards &
Scholarship Program and HMSA’s Teen Video Awards Contest,
promote physical activity and making healthy choices in Island youth.
- Adults, especially those in positions to influence the behavior of
others. The Ola Pono Awards recognize Hawaii adults who mentor others
and serve as role models for healthy, safe and drug-free lifestyles.
Their efforts often help prevent violence and substance abuse among
Hawaii’s youth.
- Seniors, in particular those who take personal responsibility for
their well-being and contribute to the well-being of their peers. The
Akamai Living Senior Lifetime Achievement Awards recognize Island
seniors who remain vital community members through volunteerism and service.
